ROYAL VISIT PLANNED FOR KING JOHN’S CASTLE, LIMERICK

King John’s Castle in Limerick City is preparing for a royal visit shortly when King Arthur, the legendary figure of the Knights of the Round Table, will grace the Castle with his presence on Friday 11th July at 7.30 pm. 

The visit to King John’s Castle is being hosted by Shannon Heritage, the Shannon Development company tourism subsidiary, and staged by Chapter House Theatre Company. The Theatre Company will use the Castle as the perfect setting to perform ‘King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table’ a brand new production from a script especially commissioned to bring to life the world famous stories of Camelot, Arthur and Merlin.

“We are delighted to be bringing this event to Limerick City. The aim of the event is to create magical theatre in magical surrounds, and what better setting than King John’s Castle. The castle’s large open courtyard provides the ideal location for theatrical, musical and incentive events. As open-air theatre lends itself perfectly to pre-show picnics we would encourage visitors get into the festive mood by bringing picnic baskets to create a memorable and magical experience,” says John Ruddle, Chief Executive, Shannon Heritage.

“We are confident that this event will contribute to Limerick’s growing reputation as a cultural and musical destination. We would hope to continue to use King Johns Castle for further events in the future and would encourage event promoters to contact us if they are looking for locations for launches and outdoor events,” he added.

With the breath taking views and captivating performances, this event promises to be a most enjoyable evenings of theatre, under the stars. The event will be performed and staged in the courtyard at King John’s Castle, with a large cast, traditional costume and an original music score performed by members of the company, Chapterhouse Theatre Company.

Over the years Chapterhouse has built a highly respected reputation for presenting splendid theatre productions in the gardens and surrounds of some of the most magnificent castles, heritage sites and country houses across Ireland and the UK.

 “Chapterhouse Theatre Company prides itself on producing accessible, traditional but innovative shows that have entertained thousands of theatregoers. King Arthur is a new work written by Laura Turner, her take on Arthur is steeped in affection for the original tales, full of the romance and the chivalry of the period. This is matched with a modern wit, music and much swordplay. I am so pleased to be able to bring this excellent production to our friends in Ireland,” Richard Main, Chapterhouse Theatre Company’s Producer.

In the fantastical world of Medieval Knights, the audience get to join a company of travelling players as they tell the heroic deeds of perhaps the greatest King of any time or place. From humble beginnings as a servant, to the drawing of the sword from the stone, through to the creation of Camelot. The audience will join Arthur on his journey as his tale unfolds with sword, sorcery and song. A wonderful new production for families and children of all ages the show will be a vivacious, energetic re-telling of some of the great tales of heroics and romance set in the perfect surroundings of King John’s Castle.   

King John’s castle gates will be open at 6.45 pm on Friday 11th July – the show commences at 7.30 pm. As part of a truly memorable experience Shannon Heritage is encouraging theatre goers to come early and bring their picnic, complete with chairs, or picnic blankets, to the Castle to add to the atmosphere and enhance their enjoyment of the evening.

Tickets for ‘King Arthur' cost €18.00 for adults; student and children €12.00; a €50.00 family ticket (2 adults and 2 children) is available, and 10% Discount for parties of 10 or more. Tickets for this event are available now from King Johns Castle on 061- 411201 and from Limerick and Ennis Tourist Information Offices. Tickets will be available on the night, but advance booking is advised.
