Shannon Heritage plans a ‘cracking’ Easter egg event at Craggaunowen
Shannon Heritage is opening its Craggaunowen visitor attraction with an ‘egg-citing’ Easter event. Craggaunowen near Quin in Co. Clare tells the story of the arrival of the Celts in Ireland. To mark the start of the tourist season Shannon Heritage has arranged for the Easter Bunny to make a special guest appearance there on Easter Sunday, (23rd March ’08).
A family fun day is promised with children being offered the opportunity to practice their bouncing skills with the Easter bunny. A bouncy castle is being organised for this event. The Easter bunny also likes music and a team of traditional musicians will be on hand to lend a festive atmosphere. Puppet shows and magic shows, always a family favourite, will be a feature of the afternoon of fun. A traditional story teller will be on hand to regale visitors with stories from times gone by.
The event promises to be a cracking fun-filled eggs-travaganza, and the Easter Bunny has promised to give away hundreds of Easter eggs to mark the end of the Lenten period and the chocolate famine!
While walking around the park visitors can experience how the Celts lived, fought, farmed, and hunted. Visitors will be able to explore the Crannog, a Bronze Age lake dwelling which was reconstructed in mid 2006 following an accidental fire. A special feature to this year’s event will see members of the Moghroith Historical Re-Inactors dressed in Bronze Age costume showing what like was like during that period.
A Ring Fort, an Iron Age roadway and 15th century Craggaunowen Castle wait to be explored. The Celts were renowned seafarers, St. Brendan the Navigator built a leather hulled boat and set sail in search of Hy-Brasil an island he had seen in a vision. Visitors can see a replica of the boat, built by Tim Severin, who sailed it to Greenland to prove that St. Brendan might have in fact discovered America before Columbus.
Shannon Heritage Company is the tourism subsidiary of Shannon Development and operates a range of eight day visitor attractions and four evening entertainments around the Shannon Region. King John’s Castle in Limerick city, and Bunratty Castle and Folk Park in Bunratty Co. Clare, are open all year round, with Bunratty Castle mediaeval banquets also operating year round.
All other Shannon Heritage evening entertainments will reopen in April; the Traditional Irish Night at the Barn in Bunratty Folk Park, the medieval banquets at Knappogue Castle and the Dunguaire Castle Banquet at Kinvara Co. Galway. Knappogue Castle is available all year round as a wedding venue and the Castle and walled Garden at Knappogue will reopen for the season in May.
Other Shannon Heritage day visitor attractions due to reopen in May are; Lough Gur visitor Centre in Co. Limerick, Dunguaire Castle in Kinvara Co Galway and the Killaloe Heritage Centre with its Brian Boru Exhibition in Co. Clare.
The Craggaunowen Easter event will take place from 1.00 pm-5.00 pm on Sunday March 23rd with last admissions at 4.00 p.m. Family tickets to Craggaunowen start at €20.50 for 2 adults and up to 2 children, € 21.50 for two adults and up to 4 children, and € 22.65 for 2 adults and up to 6 children.
