12 The Robing Room

Across the hall in the southwest tower is a room laid out as a chaplain’s robing room and study. On the left-hand side as you enter is a large oak 16th century Flemish clothes cupboard with linenfold paneling. In front is a Charles II period walnut chair.  The window embrasure frames a 16th century French chest on which stands a silver model of an 18th century ship in full sail. On the wall is a carved 16th century oak figure of a deacon wearing a dalmatic. The chasuble is pre-Reformation; its front with an embroidery orphrey in gold threads and polychrome silk depicts St. Matthew, St. Andrew and another unidentified saint. On the back is an embroidered cross-worked in gold thread and embroidered silks representing God the Father, St. Clare, St. Lucy, St.Eustace and a nobleman, the whole mounted on contemporary Italian silk velvet.  The processional cross is 16th century.

The elaborate chair is 17th century with two coats of arms and the National Emblem of Scotland. The circular table can also be used as a chair. The writing slope is 17th century. St. Barbara in slight relief is depicted on the front panel of a 15th century triptych. (The angel of the Annunciation is featured on the back). The red velvet chair is Spanish
c. 1600. The panel of Enghien tapestry is 16th century.  The 17th century bible box is on a long 12th century oak chest with iron bands and triple lock.
