7. The North (or Great) Solar

The Great Solar boasts a splendid, carefully restored timber roof.  At the west end of the room is an English oak screen of plank paneling, c1500. Standing against the paneling is a rare early Renaissance hutch table, possibly Irish, from the collection of Lady Limerick, the front containing two doors with linenfold panels, the ends with panels of pierced tracery. On the plank paneling the picture with a centaur and a saint shows a scene from the life of St. Anthony the hermit, from the late 15th century Ashburnham collection, The tapestry is Enghien, 16th century

Between the windows is a large 16th century painting on a wooden panel depicting the temptation of Adam and Eve. Below is a richly carved German 16th century cupboard.  To the right of the window is another elaborate 15th century cupboard, German, the doors and drawers are richly carved and pierced with foliage, helmets and shields. Resting on this cupboard is a finely carved figure of a stag lodged.

The tapestry over the communion ope of the Chapel is 16th century Flemish and shows a hunting scene. Below is another oak cupboard, 16th century, with two doors carved with tracery in the Gothic style and flanked by niches for figures of saints.  The jewellery casket on top is French 16th century with five keyholes.

On the right wall is a French 16th century oak cupboard with elaborate Gothic tracery and
linenfold panels at the side.   Above this is a painting of an Elizabethan gentleman.

An interesting feature of this room is the hatch to the left of the fireplace from which occupants of the room could observe the ceremonies in the Great Hall below. The chimneypiece with its limestone hood has been reconstructed, from the evidence of remaining fragments.

Over the fireplace is a King Charles II coat of arms and to the right is an Elizabethan painting on a wooden panel of a Lord Chief Justice in official robes, dated 1580.

In the centre of the room is the celebrated Armada Table, salvaged, by all accounts, from the Armada Flagship by Boethius Clancy, High Sheriff of Clare and presented to his Brother-in-law, Conor O’Brien of Lemenagh Castle.  The top of the table is supported on a frieze inlaid with a bold design of foliage in holly and with grotesque masks in relief, the corner legs carved as lions holding shields bearing a floral motif.  The two central supports are allegorical figures in 16th century costume of Hope with her anchor and Charity suckling a child, the whole supported on moulded and shaped stretchers.
