In the 1960's there was a lot of emigration from the west coast of Ireland. Each year more and more young people left to find work abroad. In 1963 the idea it was decided to put the unused castles in the region to practical use and create attractions in Ireland which would bring tourists to the Shannon Region; creating much needed employment.

Today the banquet events of the medieval castles in Ireland attract over 120,000 visitors each year. They have become the highlight of many people’s visit to Ireland and the Shannon Region.

Bunratty Castle Medieval Banquet

Bunratty Castle was the first such venture, the castle was restored by Lord Gort (an anglo Irish nobleman) with assistance from Shannon Development (the Regional tourism body of the day) and the world famous Bunratty Medieval Banquet was born. Find out more about the Bunratty Castle Banquet.
