Other places to eat in the Village: Dirty Nelly’s, JP Clarkes/Gallaghers, Meadows & Byrne & The Creamery Bar

Travel Tip: Generally, tips are optional, say, rounding up to the nearest euro in taxis or a 10% tip is customary in restaurants with good service. Also, don’t leave your change on the bar as you would in the States unless you want the barman to assume that you’re being very generous!

Some tips for your stay

Weather in Ireland

Generally, Ireland has a moderate climate with temperatures rarely falling below freezing & top temperatures only reaching 27/28C. However, it has been said of Ireland that you can experience four seasons in the one day! So bring your anorak, umbrella or hat & something warm to wear for the evening as they can be chilly! Snow is very rare. The coldest months are January & February & the warmest are July & August where you can have up to 18hrs of daylight.

How are you?

People in Ireland say “how are you” as a greeting, just like hello or hi – they don’t really want you to tell them how you are really feeling! You can just reply “grand” which means “fine”!

Talk about the weather!

Comments about the weather are ubiquitous – “grand day, thank God” or “does it ever stop raining in this country?” (no response necessary!) & here’s a strange one for you – if someone says to you “it’s very close today” they mean that it’s quite warm & nothing else!

Tax Back

If you’re visiting from outside the European Union don’t forget that you can claim tax back on certain retail purchases. Please check with your retailer or the tax-free office at the airport. Excludes hotel accommodation, meals or car-hire.
